FDA grants marketing approval for CSL Behring's Berinert C1-Esterase Inhibitor

CSL Behring announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted marketing approval for Berinert® C1-Esterase Inhibitor, Human for the treatment of acute abdominal or facial attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE), a rare and serious genetic disorder, in adult and adolescent patients. Berinert is the first and only therapy approved for this indication in the U.S.

Caregivers do not make use of CPRSs as a part of their daily routine, says study

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death among children despite the widespread availability of effective child passenger restraint systems (CPRSs) such as child safety seats. However, even when provided with free CPRSs and education about how to use them properly, many caregivers do not make them a part of their daily routine, according to the authors of a new study published in the Wisconsin Medical Journal (Vol. 108, No. 7).

Children can reduce their abdominal pain with guided imagery treatment

Children with functional abdominal pain who used audio recordings of guided imagery at home in addition to standard medical treatment were almost three times as likely to improve their pain problem, compared to children who received standard treatment alone.

CREON Delayed-Release Capsules improves fat absorption in patients with Cystic Fibrosis

Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that Phase III data published in the Journal of Cystic Fibrosis showed that CREON® (pancrelipase) Delayed-Release Capsules, the most prescribed pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) in the United States, significantly improves a key measure of fat absorption in patients with CF who suffer from exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI).

Hispanic children diagnosed with brain tumors get high-quality treatment at hospitals that specialize in neurosurgery far less often than other children with the same condition, potentially compromising their immediate prognosis and long-term survival, according to research from Johns Hopkins published in October's Pediatrics.

In one of the first studies of its kind, an international team of researchers has uncovered a single-letter change in the genetic code that is associated with autism. The finding, published in the October 8 issue of the journal Nature, implicates a neuronal gene not previously tied to the disorder and more broadly, underscores a role for common DNA variation.
