New prediction tool estimates risk for recurrence after breast-conserving surgery in DCIS patients

The decision regarding treatment following breast-conserving surgery for patients diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in-situ (DCIS) has long been an area of discussion and confusion for patients and physicians alike. While the mortality rates for DCIS remain low, the risk of local recurrence in the breast is high. Standard treatments following surgery include radiation therapy and hormone treatment. While both treatments have been proven to lower the risk of recurrence in the breast, neither has been shown to improve survival, and both carry potentially serious risks.

The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation announces research grants totaling $1.54 million

The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) has awarded 13 collaborative research grants and 3 individual research grants, totaling $1.54 million. The 16 grants represent a portion of the science grant program at the Foundation, which will award more than $2 million this year to cancer research.

Antigen Express granted patent for AE37 immunotherapeutic vaccine: Generex Biotechnology

Generex Biotechnology Corporation today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Antigen Express, Inc., has been granted a United States patent on AE37, its lead immunotherapeutic vaccine. While Antigen Express has a strong intellectual property foundation on all Ii-Key technology, this is the first "composition of matter" patent to be issued relating to one of their development products.

QIAGEN's digene HPV Test improves cervical cancer control: Study

A study released today "online first" in Cancer Causes & Control demonstrates that human papillomavirus testing, using QIAGEN's digene HPV Test, improved cervical cancer control compared to routine Pap (cytology) testing among 50,000 women across Mexico, the first country in Latin America to implement a national screening program for the high-risk types of HPV that can cause cervical cancer.

New study shows SAVI radiation therapy controls rate of breast cancer

A new study of breast cancer patients at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center and the Arizona Oncology Services shows that after almost two years, the radiation given with the Strut-Adjusted Volume Implant controls the rate of cancer and may reduce the complications seen with alternate types of brachytherapy.

Novelos reports positive results from NOV-002 Phase 2 neoadjuvant breast cancer trial

Common SNP in sequence of human genome conferring risk of vascular diseases discovered

Scientists at deCODE genetics and academic colleagues from the Netherlands and twelve other countries across Europe and North America today report the discovery of a common single-letter variation (SNP) in the sequence of the human genome conferring risk of a range of vascular diseases. The SNP confers risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), early-onset heart attack, peripheral artery disease (PAD), and pulmonary embolism, independent of other known risk factors.
