MonoSol partner Strativa receives FDA approval for Zuplenz OSF

MonoSol Rx, the developers of PharmFilm® technology and a drug delivery company specializing in film pharmaceutical products, in collaboration with APR Applied Pharma Research s.a. of Switzerland and Labtec GmbH of Germany, today announced that its partner, Strativa Pharmaceuticals has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Zuplenz® oral soluble film for the prevention of postoperative, highly and moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy-induced, and radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.

Combination of Biothera's Imprime PGG and Erbitux doubles response rate in colorectal cancer patients

The combination of Biothera's experimental drug Imprime PGG® and Erbitux® (cetuximab) doubled the historical overall response rate and the time to progression of second- and third-line metastatic colorectal cancer patients treated with Erbitux monotherapy. The data was released last weekend at the 13th World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO).

Genentech submits BLA for trastuzumab-DM1 in advanced HER2-positive breast cancer

Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, today announced that the company submitted a Biologics License Application (BLA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for trastuzumab-DM1 (T-DM1) in people with advanced HER2-positive breast cancer who have previously received multiple HER2-targeted medicines and chemotherapies.

EUSA grants Ohara Japanese rights to Erwinase oncology therapy

Heart patients treated for lymphoma at increased risk of cardiac problems

Older patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and a history of heart disease face a high risk of hospitalization for cardiac complications after completing treatment, according to research published online today in Blood, the journal of the American Society of Hematology. HL is a form of cancer of arising in the lymph nodes, and approximately 8,500 people were diagnosed with the disease in 2009, according to the American Cancer Society.

Strativa Pharmaceuticals today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Zuplenz® (ondansetron) oral soluble film for the prevention of postoperative, highly and moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy-induced, and radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Zuplenz, a unique formulation of ondansetron, is the first oral soluble film approved by the FDA as a prescription medication.

Genentech's second Phase III ICON7 study of Avastin in ovarian cancer meets primary endpoint

Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, announced today that a second large, Phase III, international study showed that the combination of Avastin® (bevacizumab) and chemotherapy, followed by the continued use of Avastin alone, increased the time women with previously untreated ovarian cancer lived without the disease worsening (progression-free survival or PFS, the primary endpoint), compared to chemotherapy alone.

Black people with cancer are up to twice as likely as other races to die from their disease. Survey: 66% of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer are now tested for KRAS

Merck Serono, a division of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, has revealed new results from a global survey demonstrating that 66% of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) are now tested for KRAS to determine if they could benefit from a personalized therapy, such as Erbitux® (cetuximab). This represents a 50% increase in levels of KRAS testing in just one year.

USPTO grants Semafore method patent for PI3K inhibitors

Semafore Pharmaceuticals today announced the United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) has issued United States Patent Number 7,745,485 entitled "Compositions and methods for identifying agents which modulate PTEN function and PI-3 kinase pathways." This patent covers methods of inhibiting the spread of cancer in patients using phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitors alone or in combination with chemotherapeutic agents.
