Takeda settles with six defendants in generic ACTOS, ACTOplus met patent infringement lawsuit

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited announced today that Takeda and its wholly owned subsidiary, Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc., have completed settlement agreements with six out of eight defendants in patent infringement litigation brought against these parties in response to their Abbreviated New Drug Applications for generic ACTOS® (pioglitazone HCl) and ACTOplus met® (pioglitazone HCl and metformin HCl). Takeda recently concluded litigation with the sixth settling defendant.

High dose B-vitamin therapy slows progression of diabetic nephropathy: Study

Patients with diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease caused by diabetes) who received high dose B-vitamin therapy experienced a more rapid decline in kidney function and had a higher rate of heart attack and stroke than patients who received placebo, according to a study in the April 28 issue of JAMA.

Phase II clinical trial to test safety and efficacy of transplanted encapsulated islets

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation announced today that it is partnering with Living Cell Technologies, a New Zealand-based biotechnology company focused on developing cell based therapeutics, in a Phase II clinical trial to study the safety and effectiveness of transplanting encapsulated insulin-producing cells from pigs as a treatment for type 1 diabetes with significant hypoglycemia unawareness.

Takeda announces submission of azilsartan medoxomil NDA for hypertension to FDA

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (Takeda) announced today that Takeda Global Research & Development Center, Inc., U.S., submitted a New Drug Application (NDA) to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for azilsartan medoxomil (development code: TAK-491), an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) under investigation for the treatment of hypertension. Discovered by Takeda, azilsartan medoxomil is designed to lower blood pressure by blocking the action of a vasopressor hormone, angiotensin II.

Generex Biotechnology Corporation today announced presentation of additional results from a recently completed Phase I clinical trial of its novel immunotherapeutic peptide AE37 in prostate cancer patients. Whole grains in diet can protect an individual from heart diseases say the CSIRO Food Futures National Research Flagship scientists. According to Dr David Topping, the chef research scientist at CSIRO consumption of whole grains in cereal and breads can reduce the risk of several diseases like obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, some cancers. Better vision ahead for many diabetic retinopathy patients

A nationwide, government-sponsored study finds that people with a common form of diabetic retinopathy can benefit from a medication first developed to combat another potentially blinding disease, age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Treating diabetic macular edema (DME) with ranibizumab (Lucentis) eye injections, plus laser treatment if needed, appears to result in better vision than laser treatment alone, according to the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research (DRCR) Network study published today in Ophthalmology online, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (Academy). DME is the main cause of vision loss in people with diabetes mellitus.

Recent studies suggest that modifiable risk factors such as cigarette smoking and fructose consumption can worsen nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. With NAFLD, fat accumulates in the liver of overweight individuals despite drinking little alcohol, causing in some cases liver scarring that can lead to liver failure.
