A study by epidemiologists at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and colleagues suggests that a high intake of calcium causes prostate cancer among African-American men who are genetically good absorbers of the mineral.

Multiple abstracts on QNEXA presented at 47th EASD

VIVUS, Inc. today announced that multiple abstracts were presented at the 47th European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting in Lisbon, Portugal. Study reveals altered digestive genes in children with autism and gastrointestinal disturbances

Researchers at the Center for Infection and Immunity (CII) at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and at the Harvard Medical School report that children with autism and gastrointestinal disturbances have altered expression of genes involved in digestion. These variations may contribute to changes in the types of bacteria in their intestines.

A few months earlier the United States Department of Agriculture unveiled ‘MyPlate’, the replacement for the food pyramid. Now the Harvard School of Public Health says that MyPlate doesn't offer enough about good nutrition, and they have offered their own version.

Two reports reveal sad state of affairs in some UK hospitals

Nurses at some institutions are serving up people’s evening meals at 3pm – just because it is more convenient, inspectors found. And several hospitals do not have enough nurses on wards to feed or wash patients, or help move them to prevent bedsores. Nurses arrive unannounced at elderly patients’ bedsides and strap blood pressure monitors round their arms without telling them what they are doing.

ONGLYZA used with insulin maintains improvement in glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and AstraZeneca today announced results from an investigational Phase 3b clinical study in which the addition of ONGLYZA (saxagliptin) 5 mg to ongoing insulin therapy (with or without metformin) maintained reductions of blood sugar levels (glycosylated hemoglobin levels, or HbA1c) in adult patients with type 2 diabetes compared to the addition of placebo (with or without metformin) from 24 to 52 weeks.

Global child mortality rate is shrinking, but not enough to reach MDG, UNICEF/WHO report says

"The annual number of children who die before they reach age five is shrinking, falling to 7.6 million global deaths in 2010 from more than 12 million in 1990, UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday" in their annual report on child mortality, Reuters reports. "Overall, 12,000 fewer children under age five die each day than a decade ago," according to the report, the news agency notes.
