Combination of inhibitor and antioxidants may help prevent diabetes complications

In diabetes patients, high blood glucose levels can end up killing certain cells in the eyes and kidneys, which is why diabetes is the leading cause of adult blindness and of kidney failure. Years ago, scientists identified one main route for this destruction—high glucose produces oxidative stress through the NF-kB molecular pathway—but success has been elusive for drugs targeting that pathway.

High sodium diet and artificially sweetened soda linked to kidney function decline

Individuals who consume a diet high in sodium or artificially sweetened drinks are more likely to experience a decline in kidney function, according to two papers being presented at the American Society of Nephrology's annual meeting in San Diego, California.

Amgen today announced the publication of results from TREAT (the Trial to Reduce Cardiovascular Events with Aranesp® Therapy), a large, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, Phase 3 pivotal study of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) not on dialysis, moderate anemia and type-2 diabetes.

Total ankle arthroplasty (ankle replacement) significantly improves quality of life making a return to light recreational activity and non-impact sports possible, according to a recent study published in the October issue of Foot & Ankle International (FAI), the official scientific journal of The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS).

FDA approves an expanded indication for BYETTA injection

Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved an expanded indication for BYETTA® (exenatide) injection. BYETTA is now approved for use as a stand-alone medication (monotherapy) along with diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes causes more new cases of legal blindness among working-age Americans than any other disease. If diabetics are monitored regularly by their ophthalmologist, this vision loss is almost always avoidable. Yet, tragically, more than half of all people living with diabetes do not get the recommended annual dilated eye exam.

sanofi-aventis reports financial results for the third quarter of 2009

In the third quarter of 2009, sanofi-aventis generated net sales of euro 7,400 million, up 8.0% on a reported basis. Exchange rate movements had a favorable effect of 2.0 percentage points, with the appreciation of the U.S. dollar (and to a lesser extent the yen) against the euro more than offsetting the unfavorable effects of some other currencies.

Michigan residents sue State over denied access to dental healthcare

In a move aimed at forcing the State of Michigan and the Legislature to protect the rights of Michigan's most vulnerable population, including the developmentally disabled and those with minimal financial resources, a lawsuit was filed in federal court against the Granholm Administration. A class of more than 400,000 at-risk Michigan residents is suing the State for failing to uphold its legal obligations with regard to funding certain dental care services under the federal Medicaid program.
