ASGE issues guidelines on ethnicity, gastrointestinal diseases and endoscopic procedures

The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) has issued guidelines addressing ethnicity, gastrointestinal diseases and endoscopic procedures. The guideline suggests that colorectal cancer screening should begin at age 45 for average risk African-American men and women, and that it is recommended that colorectal cancer screening be emphasized for other minority ethnic groups that have lower screening utilization rates.

Perrigo Company today announced that it has received final approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its abbreviated new drug application for over-the-counter (OTC) Miconazole Nitrate Vaginal Cream and Suppository, a generic to Monistat® -1 Combination Pack. Mass. insurers ask for double-digit rate hikes, again

Massachusetts' two largest insurers have again asked regulators for permission to increase their rates. "Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, the state's biggest health insurer, is requesting increases averaging 12 percent, on the lower end of the range it submitted earlier in the spring. Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, the number two carrier, wants increases that range from 8.8 percent to 11.9 percent, about the same range it sought in the round that was rejected" (Weisman, 6/3).

FDA issues letter directing GSK to revise product labeling for Serevent and Advair

GlaxoSmithKline today announced that it has received a letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration directing revisions to product labeling for its respiratory products Serevent and Advair. The letter concludes discussions between GSK and the agency following FDA advisory committee meetings regarding the safety profile of long-acting beta2-agonists in the treatment of asthma, including salmeterol, the active ingredient in Serevent and one of the active ingredients in Advair.
