UI professor highlights future challenges for improving tools for evaluating pain in older people

Although several types of pain assessment tools are available to help clinicians evaluate pain in older people, too often the sole initial emphasis is to gauge pain intensity instead of determining how the pain affects function and the need for treatment, according to research presented at the American Pain Society Annual Scientific Meeting.

Research reports adolescents, young adults with cancer may be at higher risk for social isolation

Research conducted by Xiao-Cheng Wu, MD, PhD, Associate Professor and Director of the Louisiana Tumor Registry at the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Public Health, and colleagues, reports adolescents and young adults with cancer may be at higher risk for social isolation and that a substantial proportion of them have unmet social needs that could adversely affect their health.

John Theurer to host 9th annual neuro-oncology symposium on May 17

John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center, one of the nation's top 50 cancer centers, will host its Ninth Annual Neuro-Oncology Symposium on Friday, May 17th from 8:00am-1:00pm. Experts from MD Anderson, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, and the Cleveland Clinic will present advances in multidisciplinary care for cancers of the central nervous system.

Mouse study shows leukemia halts accumulation of toxic proteins linked to Parkinson's disease

Researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center have used tiny doses of a leukemia drug to halt accumulation of toxic proteins linked to Parkinson's disease in the brains of mice. This finding provides the basis to plan a clinical trial in humans to study the effects.

In 2011, my husband, Eric, a trial attorney, was felled by a brain stem stroke just before he was to board a flight at O'Hare in Chicago. He was just 53 years old with no prior health conditions or problems. From the outset, we knew his recovery and rehabilitation would be long and difficult. We didn't know that his transition to post-hospital medical care would be just as challenging.

The University of Rochester was named a Center for AIDS Research by the National Institutes of Health, a designation that infuses $7.5 million into HIV/AIDS work across the University and places it amongst the best in the nation for research to improve the prevention, detection and treatment of the disease.
