EC approves Nivestim for prevention of FN

Hospira announced today that the EC has approved Nivestim™ (filgrastim) for the prevention of FN, the most serious haematological toxicity that occurs as a result of cancer chemotherapy. Nivestim now has marketing authorisation in all EU member states. Nivestim is expected to reduce the cost of neutropenia treatment.

Positive initial results from Nektar Therapeutics' NKTR-102 Phase 2 study for metastatic breast cancer

Nektar Therapeutics today announced positive preliminary initial results from a two-stage Phase 2 clinical study evaluating single-agent NKTR-102 in women with advanced/metastatic breast cancer patients who have received a prior taxane. The increased use of taxanes in breast cancer often renders tumors resistant to these drugs by the time the disease recurs, thereby underscoring the urgent need for new treatment options with novel mechanisms of action for metastatic disease.

University of Missouri researchers to investigate cadmium's potential for causing endometrial cancer

McDonald's announced a recall recently of 12 million "Shrek"-themed collectible glasses because traces of the toxic metal cadmium were found in them. Cadmium, a silver-white metal, is found in many substances, including certain foods and batteries, and experts believe that it might be a carcinogen. In a new study, University of Missouri researchers will investigate cadmium's potential for causing endometrial cancer.

Phase 2 Study: NKTR-102 holds great therapeutic potential for women with platinum-resistant/refractory ovarian cancer

Nektar Therapeutics today announced positive results from a Phase 2 clinical study evaluating single-agent NKTR-102 in women with platinum-resistant/refractory ovarian cancer. A total of 68 patients were enrolled with platinum-resistant disease, half of whom were platinum refractory. All 68 patients were evaluable for the primary endpoint of objective response rate using Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup criteria, which is a combination of response by tumor imaging (RECIST) and/or ovarian cancer biomarker (CA-125) criteria.

Findings from Abraxis BioScience's phase 3 ABRAXANE trial in patients with NSCLC presented at ASCO

Abraxis BioScience, Inc. announced today that findings from their phase 3 randomized trial of nanoparticle albumin bound driven chemotherapy, nab-paclitaxel (ABRAXANE for Injectable Suspension; paclitaxel albumin protein-bound particles for injectable suspension) plus carboplatin, showed a statistically significant 31 percent improvement in overall response rate when compared with Taxol (paclitaxel) injection plus carboplatin in the first-line treatment of patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

Genta Incorporated announced today the presentation of results from two dose-ranging trials of tesetaxel, the Company's novel oral tubulin inhibitor.
