CINJ researches identify new drug candidates that inhibits prostate cancer growth

Trying to break down a barrier that prevents effective treatment of prostate cancer, researchers from The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) have identified candidate drugs that block a key protein responsible for tumor growth.

Gemin X Pharmaceuticals closes $16 million Series D financing

Gemin X Pharmaceuticals, a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company developing novel, targeted cancer therapeutics, today announced the close of its $16 million Series D round of financing. Current investors Caxton Advantage Life Sciences Fund LP and Sanderling Venture Partners co-led the round. In addition, the Series D structure grants certain current investors the option to invest an additional $4 million in this financing round in the future.

Genentech to pay Seattle Genetics $9.5M for renewing licenses under existing ADC collaboration agreement

Seattle Genetics, Inc. today announced that Genentech, Inc., a wholly owned member of the Roche Group, will pay $9.5 million to renew exclusive licenses to specific targets and extend the research term under the parties' existing antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) collaboration agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, Genentech has rights to use Seattle Genetics' ADC technology with antibodies against targets selected by Genentech.

Researchers use genistein to improve outlook of pancreatic cancer

Scientists at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit today presented data at the American Association for Cancer Research's 101st Annual Meeting 2010 that shows when genistein, a component of soy, is paired with the FDA-approved drug oxaliplatin, pancreatic cancer cells become more sensitive to chemotherapy.

Biotech company Viral Genetics, Inc.,, is relocating its research facilities to the life science cluster in Georgetown, Texas. Lead scientist Dr. Karen Newell has joined the faculty of Texas A&M University's College of Medicine and has received a $750,000 grant to research bio-fuels from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund.

FDA approves Lannett's ANDA for Ondansetron Injection USP, 2 mg/mL, Multi-Dose Vials

Lannett Company, Inc. today announced that it has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Ondansetron Injection USP, 2 mg/mL, Multi-Dose Vials. Ondansetron Injection USP, 2 mg/mL is the generic equivalent of GlaxoSmithKline's Zofran® Injection, 2 mg/mL. For the 12 months ending December 2009 U.S. sales of Ondansetron Injection USP, 2 mg/mL were approximately $58 million at Average Wholesale Price (AWP). A launch date for the product has not yet been set.

LSF gene plays important role in development and progression of HCC: VCU researchers

Virginia Commonwealth University researchers have identified a new tumor-promoting gene that may play a key role in the development of liver cancer. Levels of the gene's expression are significantly higher in more than 90 percent of patients with the disease compared to their healthy counterparts.

Amgen announces results from pivotal Phase 3 "408" trial of Vectibix

Amgen today announced detailed results from a new biomarker analysis of the pivotal Phase 3 "408" trial of Vectibix® (panitumumab) plus best supportive care compared to BSC alone. The analysis used massively parallel, next-generation sequencing technology to investigate whether mutations in nine genes known to be mutated in colorectal cancer, including the previously unanalyzed exon 3 mutation of the KRAS gene, are predictive of response to Vectibix in metastatic colorectal cancer.
